Purchased with a Target gift certificate 3 years ago this (2011) Christmas. Used 16 hours a day and refilled 3 or four times every day. Boils water in just a few minutes and kept the water very hot. But, alas, the unit no longer keeps the water as hot as is needed to disolve instant coffee. The unit has outlasted anything else that I have used in the past. I am ordering a replacement unit. Note: no plastic smell ever noted, and a few times boiled vinegar in the unit to remove mineral deposits. Sounds like a lot of the complaints have more to do with the area water quality.

My wife and I received this kettle as a wedding gift. We've had it for about a year and a half. I've always been a little leery of the kettles plastic components. Today I was boiling water and I get a whiff a burning plastic smell coming from the kettle. I examined the kettle but couldn't find any problems. I figure a burning plastic smell can't be good. I think it's from the plastic strainer and the plastic water level measuring thing. I know both of those things are leeching plastic stuff into my water every time I use it. I also noticed the discoloration at the bottom of the kettle like the other reviewer. I don't think it's paint coming off. I think it's water deposites. However I can not closely examine it because it really can't be opened to clean. The design makes it impossible to clean. However the burning smell I got today is my last straw. I promptly ordered a Hamilton Beach 40898 Cool-Touch. My mother-in-law has that Hamilton Beach kettle and I love it. Hamilton Beach 40898 has no weird plastic components inside and lasts forever. My mother-in-law has had that kettle for years and it's still going strong. I highly recommend purchasing the Hamilton kettle and steering clear of the Oster 5965!

I bought this for the office and was pleased until it died after two years. was probably used 3 times a day 5 days a week for two years. looks and feels solid but didn't last. p.s. I love the Breville I have at home but it was pricey.
